The West Test

TGI Sport

//

2024

When TGI Sport approached us to help bring the inaugural West Test Summer Fest to life, the brief was refreshingly open-ended: create an innovative, video-led activation that would give visitors something they had never experienced before.

Timed alongside the opening Men's Test of the Australian summer at Perth Stadium (Optus Stadium), the newly rebranded West Test was designed to transform a cricket match into a broader festival celebrating sport, culture and entertainment.

With the event still taking shape and even its final name yet to be confirmed, we had the opportunity to develop a unique experience that would become part of the festival's first-ever identity.

Development

Phase 1:

Concept Development & Experience Design

Brianna from TGI Sport had seen elements of our augmented reality 360Pro experience during a previous activation for the University of Adelaide and challenged us to create something equally unique for the inaugural Summer Fest.

Our concept centred around integrating cricket naturally into the rotating 360Pro experience, using a moving cricket ball alongside Summer Fest's distinctive "bouncing stripes" brand language. To further establish the identity of the new event, custom animated introductions and outros were designed to frame every participant's video.

With only 3 weeks from contract signing until the event, concept development, production and freight all had to be completed within an accelerated timeline.

Phase 2:

Animation Development

The animation package was developed using Summer Fest's approved brand assets to ensure the experience felt like a natural extension of the event. A rotating cricket ball became the hero animated element, supported by the brand's signature bouncing stripe graphics throughout the introduction, main sequence and outro.

Using our augmented reality breakout technology, these elements interacted with participants by moving both in front of and behind them, creating a greater sense of depth while reinforcing the illusion that the graphics existed within the filmed environment.

Phase 3:

Physical Branding & Production

To ensure the physical activation matched the digital experience, the 360Pro platform was custom wrapped using Summer Fest's cricket-inspired branding. Working closely with TGI Sport, the design was adapted specifically for the 90 cm rotating platform before being produced within an extremely compressed timeframe.

By leveraging our long-standing supplier relationships, the custom vinyl was manufactured and installed before freight departed for Perth, ensuring every element of the activation carried a consistent visual identity.

Phase 4:

Testing & Event Readiness

Before departing for Perth, the complete experience was assembled and thoroughly tested within our simulated event space at our Adelaide facility. This allowed the team to validate every animation, augmented reality effect, camera movement and branding element in a controlled environment before deployment.

By replicating the live activation in-house, we were able to identify and resolve issues prior to freight, ensuring the experience arrived in Perth fully tested and ready for immediate installation.
